Ghiyasuddin proudly inaugurates the extremely complex and well-structured programme 'Chess' and have found the way to integrate Chess into the curriculum, as the first school to do this in Maldives. This programme will be an exceptional learning tool to connect with the fundamental subject Mathematics. The prime aims in teaching Chess through the curriculum are to develop students' logical thinking, enhance concentration levels, and facilitate numeracy and reading comprehension.

In order to boost the motivation to learn Chess, GIS inaugurated the programme today with a special assembly which was attended by Exco members of Maldives Chess Federation, GIS PTA Exco members, and a member from MoE. Students and staff along with the invitees enjoyed the amazing décor prepared by the teachers of Grades 1 – 5 under the guidance of the Academic Coordinators and Deputy Principal.
During the special assembly, Lana Ahmed Nazmee from 3A shared the benefits of learning chess. At the gathering, Principal Thoha Saleem highlighted in his speech that Chess is not only a sport but it is a tool that develops logical thinking as there is logic behind everything we do and everybody needs to give a logical reason for whatever we do. Principal also stressed on the point that it is an opportunity for students of GIS to become grand masters in the future. At the assembly, Mr. Nooh the president of Maldives Chess Federation addressed the students and staff and thanked the school for introducing Chess as this would be a great opportunity for the Federation to motivate the students to become future National and International Players.
Apart from the Principal and Mr. Nooh, Mr. Ijaz from Maldives Chess Federation who is also the School Director for Chess addressed the gathering. Mr. Ijaz also motivated the students by sharing that Chess would open doors for the students to explore National and International platforms and travel around the world. Talking about the benefits of Chess, Mr. Ijaz specifically pointed out that emerging players coming from the levels Gr. 1 – 5 can mold their brains as their brains will be flexible and this would build character in them as well as teach them patience; thus advised the students that hard work is the road to success.
Motivating students has always been a strong aim of the school, so is motivating staff. In this regard, at the assembly, staff who participated in the staff Chess tournament were awarded with participation and achievement certificates. This tournament was won by Mr. Faizal ,the Head of Mathematics Department.
Today's assembly ended after the Principal and Mr. Nooh officially declared that Chess has been introduced into Grades 1 – 5 curriculum and later observed two pairs of students engaged in a Chess game.
GIS wishes to continue each new programme and thus to carry out teaching and learning of Chess according to a structured manner, GIS has a partner-school cooperation with LearningChess.net which provides our teachers online chess education materials and tools while teaching the students. For this, the teachers' team is already registered under LearningChess.net and all students of Grades 1 – 5 will also be registered under LearningChess.net and soon would become licensed users of LearningChess.net.
With this programme, GIS foresees that the students of GIS would playfully imbibe smart, strategic and creative thinking and become quick in problem-solving when they start to function as smart citizens in the country. The school also thanks the Junior Section of the school for taking interest in moving ahead with the programme.
